Spur-of-the-moment (and slightly cynical) thoughts on Obama’s Berlin speech

First impression: Someone in the crowd responds to “My father raised goats in Kenya” with some sort of crazed goat impersonation, which our “citizen of the world” Obama stopped his speech to laugh about…

Then a history lesson, which is slightly boring to me and likely VERY boring to a lot of those who went to the Obama speech hoping to hear sweeping rhetoric about Change® and Hope®…

Now a statement on “NATO: The greatest something-something”… proving Obama has no plans to make the United States into a non-interventionist society, but only one that picks its battles more wisely…

Token mention of Darfur in midst of a “global threat” screed that sounds like Bush, only more grammatically correct…

“The burdens of global citizenship continue to bind us together”… sounds awful, at first, until he gets to the part on how Europe needs to pull more of its weight in our so-far lopsided treaties…

Have lost interest, and trying to regain it…

“This is the moment when we must defeat terror and dry up the well of despair that inspires it”… sounds nice, but what does it mean? Why, exactly, is Obama making a sweeping speech about a war on terror?…

Onto Afghanistan, which increasingly seems to be a linchpin of Obama’s candidacy. I’m not sure why Germans are the ones he decided to give this speech to, or what exactly is to be gained by it. War hawks aren’t going to suddenly vote for Obama because of his emphasis on Afghanistan, since they have always seen Iraq as a worthwhile move, even now. (Not surprisingly, the applause has gotten significantly weaker as the war talk continues.)…

BIG applause on the line which states “this is the moment” when we start to rid the world of nuclear weapons…

Now onto trade populism… “free and fair for all”… oh wait, back to Mideast…

Big applause on bringing the Iraq war to a close… now chants of “O-Bah-Mah!”…

Now back onto “saving the planet” (his words)… “give our children back their future.” Sounds great, if you can do it…

And back to Darfur… When is he going to make an actual policy statement on what’s going on there? How will he address it? How will the U.S. military be used? This is a serious question that deserves a serious answer, but I doubt we’re likely to hear it in this “did the surge work,” “where’s your lapel pin,” “who’s more patriotic” election cycle…

Overall, a confusing speech, one that might be a bit uplifting but that offers no real prescriptions for our ills (whatever they may be). I liked the one on race a lot better.
